      Mike was a commercial winemaker for many years and the former food and beverage director at the historic Columbia Gorge Hotel. His wife, Shawna, was a former high school art teacher and is a wonderful, self-trained chef and baker. They've owned their restaurants for more than 20 years.

      They opened their first restaurant, North Oak Brasserie, in 1999 after Mike wrote the successful novel, Varietal Tendencies, a multi-generational work of fiction about an historic family of winemakers.
